Other Gods

There is no such thing as a true atheist. Everyone has a "god". They may not call it God. Yet everyone has something or someone that orients and gives meaning to their life. People in our culture do not make and worship statues of gold or silver, but some people worship money or fame. Others worship another person. Still others worship their own bodies, or the earth. There are those who worship technology and "progress." All these things are idols, false gods people worship and look to for hope and "salvation." Everyone worships something. It's not a question of whether or not we have a god, but what is the god we choose to worship?

Here Paul argues that of all the gods of our world there is only one true God. Only this God has the power and authority to set the standards for human behavior. ONLY this God is the source of all truth. Furthermore, Paul says that the God of the universe has already revealed himself through creation (see Rom. 1:19-20), and now he has revealed himself through his word, the Lord Jesus Christ ( see John 1:1-14). So there is no excuse for choosing a lesser god.

Choosing to worship and serve any other thing, no matter how beautiful or costly, is to worship the creation and not the Creator. It is foolish to do this, and it eventually produces foolishness and deprived behavior (see Rom. 1:21-32). We must instead give our highest allegiance to God and worship him alone with our hearts, minds, and lives.

Consider This: Have you made the choice to worship and serve the true God alone?
