Will obeying God bring riches and wealth? Does becoming a Christian guarantee success? Some people teach that if we have enough faith our financial dreams will be realized. Others seem to assume that choosing to follow God means committing yourself to poverty or, at most, very modest means. What is the truth?
This psalm suggests that we must begin with an accurate definition of success comes from being "planted" in God's will. If we commit ourselves to "doing everything the LORD wants" (1:2), we will be truly prosperous and successful. While choosing God's way is not a magical formula for material success, it does lead us into a life of integrity and wisdom, which, in turn, prevents us from many foolish mistakes (see Prov. 22:1-4). When we trust God to shape our character, choices, and priorities, we will find that he will fill our lives with blessings far greater than material things; he will give us true spiritual prosperity. This is what success is all about.
